Marvin Gaye deep dive

With this month’s release of Gaye’s “lost” 1972 album ‘You’re the Man’ I’ve been diving deep into his catalogue and biography. In the midst, I found this article on how to apply the wisdom of Gaye to one’s own life. It’s nonsense — Gaye’s volatility fueled his many disappearances and his fear of commercial failure guided many of his creative decisions — but I like the idea of considering musical heroes when identifying mental- and creative-healthy habits.

The Gift of Fear

One of my inspirations, Gavin De Becker, has been in the news lately for his role in protecting Amazon’s Jeff Bezos from blackmail by the National Inquirer. De Becker, a security expert who grew up in a violent household and turned his experience into a career in protecting others, wrote one of my all-time favorite books, centered on listening to your gut and identifying controlling/threatening behaviors in others, The Gift of Fear.
